One of the students who was present in the classroom and managed to escape the falling debris, recounted the horror saying the students gathered in the room noticed the gravel falling from the roof. She had rushed to warn her teacher about it, but apparently the teacher, who was eating breakfast with other staff members in the outer area, scolded her and told her to get back to the classroom. Soon after the roof collapsed on the gathered students burying most of them under the debris.
Five staff members have been suspended by the authorities for criminal negligence.
As per preliminary reports, the building was in a dilapidated condition. Angry and grief-stricken locals allege they had informed the tehsildar and sub-divisional magistrate about the condition of the school building but no action was taken.
