Football world mourns Diogo Jota; fans demand jersey retirement
July 4, 2025 - The football world is in shock after the sudden death of Liverpool and Portuguese star Diogo Jota and his brother André in a road accident. From Cristiano Ronaldo to Lionel Messi, many players have expressed deep sorrow over Jota's passing.
Since the news of his death came out yesterday, July 3, many Liverpool fans have gathered outside Anfield Stadium. They paid tribute to Jota by bringing flowers and standing in silence, some with tears in their eyes.
After Jota’s death, many fans have requested that his number 20 jersey be retired. In response, Liverpool officials said in a statement that Jota’s jersey will be “immortal,” showing how much he meant to the club and its supporters.
Liverpool on Jota's Jersey
In a statement, Liverpool officials wrote, “The number 20 jersey will be rightly immortalised for his contribution to Liverpool’s 20th league title win in the 2024–25 season. The winning goal, scored with a natural body swing in front of fans during the Merseyside derby in April, was the last goal of his life. That moment still touches the heart.”
Will No. 20 Jersey Be Retired?
Although the club did not clearly say whether Jota’s jersey will be officially retired or if someone else will wear it in the future, many fans believe this is the club’s way of retiring the number 20. Many news outlets are also reporting that “immortalising” the jersey means it may never be used again.
Fans Demand to Retire the Jersey
After the tragic news, many fans took to social media to ask the club to retire Jota’s number 20 jersey. A fan named Maxi wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Football is not important at this moment. But I hope Liverpool will retire the number 20 jersey. It would hurt fans to see someone else wear it after Jota’s death.”
Another fan, Mickey Junior, wrote, “Diogo Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 and wore the number 20 jersey. This season Liverpool won their 20th league title, and sadly, we lost him. The club should retire the jersey forever in his honour.”
Funeral Details
The funeral for Jota and his brother Andre will be held on Saturday, July 5, at 10:00 am local time at the main church of Gondomar, their hometown in Portugal — Igreja Matriz de Gondomar. After the ceremony, they will be buried in the local cemetery.
