At Least 5 Dead in Major Karnataka Bus-Truck Collision
A truck rams into an oncoming sleeper bus with 32 passengers on NH 48 in Chitradurga, Karnataka; victims burnt alive as the vehicle catches fire
Dec 25, 2025 - At least five people are feared dead and several injured when a sleeper bus collided with a container truck in Karnataka and burst into flames early on Thursday (December 25) morning. The accident happened on National Highway 48 in Chitradurga district when the bus with 32 onboard was hit by the truck coming from the opposite direction. The truck driver lost control of his vehicle, hit the road divider and rammed into the oncoming bus.
The passenger bus was on a 300-km journey from Bengaluru to Shivamogga. Most of the deceased were the bus passengers and were burnt alive after their vehicle was engulfed in flames within minutes when the truck directly hit the bus’ diesel tank, as per reports. Other reports say up to nine or ten people have died, with the toll still feared to rise as rescue and identification efforts continue.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has expressed his condolences and has called the incident "heartbreaking" and ordered a thorough investigation. He has announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "deeply saddened" and announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the family members of the dead and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
