Vehicles Plunge into River After Bridge Collapses in Vadodara; 9 Dead
Collapse happened during peak morning traffic on July 9; two trucks, van and SUV fell into the river
July 9, 2025 – Nine people were killed when the bridge, which connects the Anand and Vadodara districts, gave way during peak morning traffic hours today, July 9, causing vehicles to fall into the Mahisagar River. Another nine people were rescued of which five were taken to hospital.
There was a loud cracking sound as a 10-15 metre long slab of the Gambhira-Mujpur bridge in Padra taluka of Vadodara collapsed at around 7:30 am. At least four vehicles which were crossing that section of the bridge at that time – two trucks, a pick-up van and a Bolero SUV – fell into the river.
Rescue operations are continuing. Divers are searching the river for more victims.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 each to the injured. PM Modi has condoled the deaths in a statement writing, "The loss of lives due to the collapse of a bridge in Vadodara district, Gujarat, is deeply saddening. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones."
