In what could be termed as the most inhuman act executed by hundreds of villagers near Salumber, a leopard was beaten to death, while, the forest officers and the animal rescue team could not help the animal.

The incident took place today early afternoon near Trimurti Jain Mandir, where leopard was found hiding near the temple; large crowd gathered at the place, as the news spread in nearby villages too.

Scared animal moved close to the temple taking cover from the crowd; Forest Team, including Satnam Singh, Mahipal Singh (ACF, South), Shambu Singh (Forest Ranger), SDM Salumber, and Police officers reached on the scene.

Satnam Singh tried to tranquilize the leopard, but his dart missed the right spot and the horrified beast became uncomfortable and drowsy; terrified, the animal jumped outside a wall. Finding no way to escape from the gathering crowd, the creature injured 8 people, including a woman.

As soon as the animal attacked villagers in its defense, mob turned violent and insane, and in front of the Forest and Police officials, killed the animal by showering sticks and stones on the poor animal.

Defiantly, these kinds of incidents raise many questions. The civilized society is becoming wild and “We”, whom we call humans, are carrying out inhuman behavior; forests are shrinking due to continuous growing population and illegal encroachments. And within all this mayhem, when some animal, out of thirst and search for food comes close to the human settlements, these so called educated humans behave like an insane killer.

Why doesn’t government take action against such cases? Day-by-Day these magnificent animals are becoming victims of the human hegemony.

The dead body of leopard was brought to the Gulab Bagh Zoo. “Killed leopard was a fully grown male being; postmortem of the animal will be done tomorrow”, said the Forest officials.
