Divisional Commissioner and Chairman of the Udaipur Development Authority (UDA), Rajendra Bhatt, emphasized that Udaipur, known worldwide for tourism and destination weddings, should also be a leader in cleanliness. He highlighted the need for coordinated efforts to achieve this goal.
Concerns about the city's sanitation system were raised earlier this week, following which a meeting of the key stakeholders was held on May 17, 2024 at the UDA auditorium to address cleanliness and sanitation issues.
Presiding over the meeting, Bhatt said that with the city's expansion, maintaining cleanliness is a significant challenge. The lack of proper sanitation in UDA controlled areas is causing distress to residents and creating a negative image among tourists. He directed the Municipal Corporation and UDA officials to create a comprehensive plan for robust sanitation, assuring them that there are no budget constraints. Udaipur Collector Arvind Poswal also stressed the importance of raising public awareness about cleanliness.
To support this effort, the Municipal Corporation has published pamphlets to educate the public about the ban on single-use plastic. Cloth bags have also been prepared. The Commissioner explained that the pamphlets will inform the public about the hazards of single-use plastic and encourage them to minimise their use. Cloth carry bags will be distributed at designated locations to promote the use of eco-friendly alternatives. The other initiatives in this context include:
1. Encourage proper waste segregation: each household will receive two garbage bins, one green and one blue, for separating wet and dry waste.
2. During door-to-door garbage collection, strict adherence to separating wet and dry waste into designated containers is ensured.
3. Implementing a QR code system will enable monitoring of cleanliness arrangements, facilitating direct public complaints in case of inadequate cleaning.
4. Contractors will face penalties for recurring complaints, encouraging them to maintain high service standards.
5. Following the tender process for door-to-door garbage collection, GPS systems will be installed in vehicles to ensure efficient service.
6. Enhancing the cleanliness system includes modifying tenders to incorporate nocturnal street cleaning for improved nighttime sanitation.
7. New tenders will be issued, specifying the required machinery and equipment to enhance waste management practices.
