Councilors express Discontent on performance of UMC Board Working

The atmosphere at the UMC Board Meeting on Tuesday was highly explosive with most Councilors expressing their anguish over the working of the current BJP led Board.

This was the third Board meeting of BJP led board, where 49 members of the 55 total are BJP Councilors.  Mayor Chandra Singh Kothari was subject to a volley of questions and imputations on the status of administrative and operational problems in the city.  The Councilors were of the view that the meeting Agenda neither had any mention of solutions to problems in the city, specifically related to water shortage; nor any mention of development proposals.

Najma Mewafarosh demanded that the Water Department be bought to task, for its inability to solve the water problems in the city, which ironically is the City of Lakes.  The Cabinet Minister for PHED and Ground Water Department, Rajasthan, belongs to Udaipur, still the city faces water crisis, said Mohsin Khan, another Councilor.

Rehana Germanwala, who heads Water Distribution, said that though the UMC Board had three meetings with PHED, still the problems related to water persist.

Mayor Kothari in this address said that various proposals for development have been sent to respective committees at the state level and their approval is awaited.  Paras Singhvi, Bhagwan Kharol and Jagat Nagda expressed their anger over this statement and said that the city cannot keep on waiting for approvals from Committees that are not organized enough even to have regular and structured meetings and take quick decisions.

The proposals approved in the Board meeting on Tuesday include:

Power: 29000 Sqft land will be allotted to the Electricity Department for the construction of 132 KV GSS, at 50% of the serve price.

Tourism: Free Cycles for One Hour at Fatehsagar; Rs. 10/- per hour thereon; Locker Facilities

Hotel License Fees: Hotel, Restaurant and Shop License rates to be increased as per new Gazette

Horse/Camel Rides: Licenses to be provided as per new regulations to service providers

Gandhi Ground: Rental at Bhandari Darshak Mandap to be set at Rs. 15,000 per day.  Electricity/Water extra
