Electricity bill set to go up

Your electricity bill in March and April is set to be higher on account of additional fuel surcharge that will be levied by DISCOM. The charge has been fixed at 37p per unit.

Surcharge would be levied slab wise. For units below 100, Rs 37 additional will be levied as surcharge. Similarly between 100 and 200 units, Rs 74 will be levied and so on. The surcharge is levied for recovering additional fuel cost incurred on coal, diesel and transportation cost of fuel.

The surcharge changes every 3 months but the surcharge this time is the highest in last two years. The surcharge for electricity units consumed 3-6 months back is levied in future bills due to delay in accounting of cost of coal, diesel and transportation expenses.

Past slab increases were as follows:

  • Apr-Jun 2017: 10p
  • Jul-Sep 2017: 25p
  • Oct-Dec 2017: 8p
  • Jan-Mar 2018: 0p
  • Apr-Jun 2018: 18p
  • Jul-Sep 2018: 37p
