End of Power Woes for Udaipur?

Udaipur is one of the Four cities of Rajasthan that have been identified for Power Privatization.

Subsequent to the survey conducted by State run consultant Wapcos in Udaipur, Jaipur, Ajmer and Jodhpur, the Power Supply infrastructure and system was found to be worthy of being transferred to a private company under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, where the private company will manage the Power Infra and supply under joint association with the Ajmer Vidhyut Vitran Nigam Limited (AVVNL).

Wapcos was hired as a consultant by the state government to review the Power Supply Infrastructure in the four major cities of the state, to review the possibilities of a Public Private Partnership model, where the Power Infra Management will be done by a Private company in joint cooperation with the state run operatives, AVVNL in this case.

Over the two month survey, concluded recently, it has been proposed that the Power Infra System will be transferred under a PPP model before Diwali this year, which is 6 months down the line.  The report by the consultant company will be handed over the DISCOM within this month, following which the PPP MoU will be signed.

What does this mean?

  • Post the MoU, Power Management will be Privatized for the next 25 years
  • Power Purchase, distribution, billing and maintenance by Private company
  • The entire AVVNL staff will work under the Management of the Private Company
  • Private company will address the problems of the public
  • Rates will however be controlled by state laws
  • Power can be purchased from the open market when required
