Fateh Sagar starts receiving water from Pichhola

With water levels at Pichhola reached 10 feet and fast approaching 11 feet mark owing to the water released from Akodara dam, administration opened up the link channel connecting Swaroop Sagar and Fateh Sagar to transfer the stored water and bring the two water bodies levelled at 11 feet.

Link channel was opened without cleaning the water that was stagnant in the channel for over 4 months. This resulted in a large amount of dirty water entering Fateh Sagar and spoiling the beauty and water quality in the lake.

Currently the gates have been opened by 6 inches. The gates will continue being open till the water level in both the lakes reach the 11 feet mark. Readers may note that 11 ft is the maximum storage capacity of Pichhola beyond which it overflows. If water flow to Pichhola continues post the 11 feet mark, the water will overflow and reach UdaiSagar via the Ayad river.

Readers may note that Akodara dam was facing constant leakage of water due to problem in proper closure of gate. The gate will be repaired only once the water levels subside. Hence, considering that water was leaking and that Sisarma river bed was already moist, it was decided to release the water into Pichhola so that minimal water is lost due to ground absorbtion along the river bed.
