Several steps are being taken to carry out the Smart city project in Udaipur. The major issue of garbage still remains.

UIT and Municipal Corporation are constantly on the move with the issue of garbage and its disposal. The major trouble here is that despite all the efforts, the city is not completely clean. The reason behind this is scarcity of means and improper facilities. Even with the door to door garbage collection facility, garbage is not collected even to the extent of 15 percent. Research shows that 150 tonnes of garbage is disposed by the city daily but the collection is hardly 25 tonnes by auto-tipper, 75 tonnes by tractor, trolley and container. Despite this, almost 50 tonnes of garbage lies scattered in the city on roads in open.

The auto-tippers running in the city can collect 500 kilos of garbage in a day. The other 3 tippers which collect garbage from hotels and markets have a capacity of 800 kilos per day. The city has 40 auto-tippers, 19 truck and tractor trolleys. All these collect around 22000 kilo of garbage in a day.

The garbage collectors start their cleaning work by 6 in the morning. They are supposed to collect all the garbage in an hour and dump it in the yard. But the garbage vehicle drivers are never on time and they reach the site by 9 or 9:30 a.m. Health officer Himmat Singh Panwar has reported this impunctuality a number of times but the Garage officer Babulal Chauhan blames it on the garbage collectors. Basically each one is trying to save his own skin or as it seems by blaming the other.

All colonies have different experiences with the garbage collectors. The garbage is picked up daily in some colonies but on alternate days in some. Timing is also a major issue. Sometimes they reach by 8 or 8:30 a.m. and sometimes as late as 2 p.m. With working people, early morning time is more suitable. In fact, everyone prefers garbage to be cleared early. But with few vehicles for this purpose, timing is certainly an issue that everyone has to bear with. Steps need to be taken in this direction since garbage lying at any place for a long time is a health hazard. If a city cannot be kept clean, it cannot be considered appropriate to be added in the smart city project.
