Maharashtra Municipal Election Jan 15: BMC Key Battleground
All eyes on the Thackeray brothers - Udhav and Raj - who have united after almost 20 years to regain control of the State's civic bodies
Jan 15, 2026 - Maharashtra is voting today, Thursday (January 15), to elect as many as 29 municipal corporators to the new municipal corporation. Voting began at 7:30 am for 2,869 seats across 893 wards and will continue until 5:30 pm. The fate of 15,931 candidates will be decided on Friday (January 16) when results are declared.
The run-up to this election has been highly volatile with all eyes on the Thackeray brothers - Udhav and Raj - who have united after almost 20 years to regain control of the State's civic bodies. Their key rival is the Mahayuti comprising Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and its ally, the BJP. Other parties in the fray, in different tie-ups, are the Congress and NCP factions.
The Mumbai seat will be key in this contest, with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) looked upon as the city’s cash-rich civic body. BMC has gone to the polls after a gap of almost nine years, after 2017. The other four most important civic bodies are Thane, Nagpur, Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. Voters for BMC will have to cast a single vote because of its one-ward-one-corporator model. For other cities in Maharashtra, each voter will cast 3-5 votes owing to their multi-member ward system.
