Udaipur, Nov 1, 2025 — Udaipur Nagar Nigam Commissioner Abhishek Khanna yesterday conducted a meeting with the monitoring committee formed under the Animal Birth Control programme to ensure compliance with Supreme Court directives regarding dog sterilisation in the city. He also issued necessary instructions to all concerned.

Commissioner Khanna informed that the meeting of the monitoring committee, formed under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 and Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001, was held at the Nagar Nigam office yesterday. Committee members included Rajkishore Verma, Dr Suresh Jain, Dr Mala, Dr Mayanka Seth, Neha Banyai, Claire Abraham and Dr Lalit Joshi, along with Health Officer Satyanarayan Sharma, Health Inspector Narendra Shrimali, Subhash Chandra Sharma and others.

During the meeting, Commissioner Khanna instructed that all activities under the Animal Birth Control programme should strictly follow the criteria laid down by the Supreme Court. Discussions were also held regarding the increasing number of stray dogs in the city and dog-bite cases and instructions were given to take necessary action.

The Commissioner clearly said that there must be no violation of the Supreme Court’s directives and special attention must be paid to compliance.

25,000 Stray Dogs in City

According to Commissioner Khanna, there are approximately 25,000 stray dogs across 80 wards of the city. Steps will be taken immediately to control their population and reduce dog-bite incidents, ensuring relief for the public.

Feeding Points to be Created

Khanna directed committee members to identify major locations in the city for setting up feeding points. Additional feeding points will be set up in areas with high stray dog density, so that animal lovers and residents feeding dogs have suitable designated locations.

Increase Sterilisation

Strict instructions were given to Animal Aid representatives to increase the monthly number of sterilisations to control the stray dog population. The Commissioner said that currently, 500–600 sterilisations are being done per month, which is below the required target. He ordered that the target be increased. Sterilisation has been completed in approximately 18 wards so far.

Dog Sterilisation Data

In the meeting, Claire Abraham from Animal Aid informed that 15,243 stray dogs have been sterilised so far, and efforts are ongoing to increase this number.

Residents can contact the dog sterilisation helpline at 9929864454.

Steps Against Aggressive Dogs

The Commissioner said that any stray dog suffering from rabies or biting people will be humanely captured and safely shifted to a kennel. The dog will be kept under veterinary supervision with proper food and water until its natural death. Dogs repeatedly involved in biting incidents will also be captured and handed over to animal shelters or registered animal welfare organisations for proper care.

Appeal for Public Cooperation

Khanna appealed to animal lovers and citizens that anyone wishing to set up a feeding point near their home may contact Health Inspector Subhash Chandra Sharma at 9460114257 or Animal Aid representative Rajkishore Verma at 9929864454 to complete the process.
