Goverdhan Sagar, situated at the southern end of Udaipur will reap the benefits of the overflow from Pichhola Lake this monsoon.  This lake has been the reservoir of garbage and sewerage of that part of the city for all these past years.  The link channel connecting Pichhola to Goverdhan Sagar was blocked with filth.

A long overdue cleaning exercise over the last couple of months has ensured that Goverdhan Sagar will, after 45 years, now be a part of the beautiful lake sequence of the City of Lakes.

The Udaipur Municipal Corporation, after an exercise of over 45 days and cleaned the over 1km long Goverdhan Sagar link channel (nahar).  The link channel passed through the Military Cantonment zone, which was one of the reasons why the channel was not accessed by the UMC all these years.  Why the UMC did not approach the Military earlier, does raise a few eyebrows, as the Military would have been all too happy to accede permission to clean the channel.

The last time this channel was cleared was way back in 1973-74 during the drought.  Since then, the channel had been left orphaned and no one really paid attention to this sequence.

Once the Pichhola lake approaches 9ft, the Goveradhan link will open to allow the water to flow through to Goverdhan Sagar.
