Privatisation of railway stations

Central government has decided to hand over 23 railway stations to private sectors. Two stations of Uttar Pradesh and Udaipur’s railway station is also on the list.
In Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur Central and Allahabad Junction will be given away to private sectors. In Rajasthan, Udaipur railway station will be privatised.
An auction is supposed to be held on 28th June. The companies or individuals desirous of handling the railway station under their banner can place their bids on the railway website. The bid for Kanpur railway station is 200 crore rupees and that of Allahabad is 150 crore rupees. The final declaration will be made on 30th June.
Role of railway
Railways will take care of ticketing, security, parcel service and running of trains after privatisation. For security, private companies will also appoint security guards at various points of the station. It has been decided that the privatisation will be done for 45 years and handed over to private companies on lease. Based on this, the company will be liable to equip the station with world standard facilities and amenities. The station platform will have food stalls, retiring rooms, fresh area and play area.
Kanpur and Allahabad railway stations will not undergo a face lift. The company buying the railway station will construct five-star hotel, multiplex and shopping mall on the land lying vacant in the station premises.
