Gazette Notification Mandatory for Name Correction; Relief for Surname Addition

Udaipur, April 30, 2026: Gazette Notification (official publication) has now been made mandatory for major changes in birth certificates. The guidelines toward this amendement in the Registration of Births and Deaths Act (2023) and State Rules (2025) were issued by the Department of Economics and Statistics of the Government of Rajasthan. As per the orders, the amendment has been done to improve transparency.

According to the notification, a publication in the Rajasthan Government Gazette will be needed for the following amendments, for the residents of Rajasthan:

  • Any change in first name
  • Addition or modification of middle name
  • Adding parent’s name with the original name
  • Changing an already recorded surname

For residents of other states, only changes supported by publication in the Government of India Gazette notification will be accepted, as per Puneet Sharma, the District Registrar (Birth & Death), Udaipur.

Relief in Adding Surname

Where only a childs name is mentioned in the birth certificate, parents can submit documentary proof of their surnames along with a simple affidavit to add their surname to theirs child's name in the birth certificate.
