MP Rawat Calls for 'Y Category Status' for Udaipur
Currently, because of the Z category, Central and State Government employees in Udaipur receive only 10% House Rent Allowance (HRA)
Udaipur, Jan 20, 2026 - MP Dr Manna Lal Rawat has written a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman requesting the classification of Udaipur city as a Y category city.
In his letter, MP Rawat wrote that Udaipur city, under the Udaipur Lok Sabha constituency, is currently classified as a Z category city. With the recent expansion of Udaipur Nagar Nigam, a total of 80 wards have been formed in the Nigam area, with a total population of 573,585, based on the 2011 census. Fourteen years after this census, the actual population of Udaipur Nagar Nigam has crossed 700,000.
Currently, because of the Z category, Central and State Government employees in Udaipur receive only 10% House Rent Allowance (HRA).
In his letter, MP Rawat mentioned that in Udaipur housing rent is significantly higher compared to other cities because of it being a popular tourist city and attracting millions of domestic and international tourists annually. Various government employee associations and unions have been continuously demanding the registration of Udaipur city as a Y category city.
The MP urged the Union Finance Minister to grant Y category status to Udaipur which, he said, fully deserves it.
It may be noted that during a public hearing recently held by MP Rawat at the Zila Parishad Auditorium, office bearers of various employee organisations, including the Private Assistants’ Federation, Clerical Staff of District Collector Office and Rajasthan Computer Subordinate Employees’ Union, had raised this demand.
