Gandhi Ground, enveloping the Bhandari Darshak Mandap, once Udaipur’s only playground, now hosts a vast range of events – most of them non-sporting events.

For those who remember Udaipur from the yesteryears, many have spent their childhood and youth on the tracks and greens of Gandhi Ground. Many have spent early morning and late evenings on the staircase stands of the stadium.

Even now, each morning and evening sees children, youth and the elderly enjoying themselves in the ground. A large group of children can be seen playing football under the able guidance of coaches who offer their services free, for love of the game.

However, the administration, who is busy in digging up roads across town to pacify their political bosses, is oblivious to the plight of the ground as seems the case now.

At times, the administration seems to be purposely turning a blind eye to the property, that is the heart of the town.

It seems only when there is big event in town or a Republic Day parade of when one of the political bosses is in town, does the ground get a fair eye.

Posted below are pictures that were taken over the last two days, which show the shameless attitude. Parts of the ground and tracks have been razed. Busses are plying on tracks meant for athletics.

Guests at a wedding function are actually plying their vehicles over the ground and have damaged the turf and tracks.  A drunk person is seen lying down on the ground and no one seems to care less.
