Train Bookings during Festival season | Relaxation in Flexi Train Fares

Railway Ministry has done away with the Flexi Fares system just a week before the Diwali.  The Flexi Fare system has been removed from 15 trains, while the system will stay inapplicable across 32 other trains.

How the discontinuation of Flexi Fares will benefit travellers

  • Under the Flexi Fare System, a Rs 100 ticket used to cost Rs 150 earlier.  Now the Rs 100 ticket will not cost more than Rs 140.
  • Fore eg. A Jaipur-Delhi Shatabdi Third Class Fare was costing Rs 441.  With the earlier Flexi Fare of 1.5, the ticket would cost Rs 661, now it will cost Rs 617, which is a benefit of Rs 44.
  • Those trains where the booking is less than 50%, there will be no Flexi Fare…the ticket price will remain as it is.

Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duranto and other premium trains had been included in the Flexi Fare program, and after a minimum booking was crossed, the rates used to go up by 10% or more, with maximum being 50%, which is 1.5 times.  This option has been removed for the Diwali season.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said that this will benefit the railways as well as the commuters.  The removal of the Flexi Fare system will ensure that commuters prefer the train route and book their travel in trains, thereby increasing the passenger commute volume.  The Flexi Fare system has increased the revenue for the Railways by upto Rs 700 Crore per annum, making it a no-brainer in deciding to continue this system.
