UDA to Transform Peripheral Water Bodies into Eco-Tourism Sites

UDA will restore ponds, dams, wells and stepwells in Udaipur’s outskirts with Rs 16.03 crore funding; the project aims to boost eco-tourism, improve groundwater levels and enhance heritage-based tourism experiences

Udaipur, April 14, 2026 - The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has launched an initiative to develop traditional water sources located in the Udaipur city’s peripheral areas as new tourist attractions. The purpose is to offer tourists a peaceful, natural and heritage-linked experience outside the city. A budget of Rs 16.03 crore for the financial year 2026–27 has been approved for the restoration and beautification of these water bodies.

Under this scheme, ponds, dams, wells and stepwells that have remained away from the main tourism map will soon appear in a renewed form. These measures will not only expand the scope of tourism but also strengthen water conservation efforts.

Special focus will be given to the environment and aesthetics. Reports quoting UDA Secretary Hemendra Nagar say that improvement of feeder canals will increase the flow of clean water into ponds, while a scientific drainage system will prevent polluted water from entering. This will improve groundwater levels, increase water availability in surrounding areas and further boost tourism.

Key Developments

  • Green belts will be developed along pond edges
  • Walkways, seating areas and viewpoints will be created
  • Stepwells will be preserved in traditional architectural style
  • Development work will ensure natural water flow is maintained
  • Soft lighting and landscaping will enhance night-time attraction
  • Ponds, dams, wells and stepwells will become part of tourism circuits
