20 Best Cities will be paired with the least performing cities and will act as mentors

Sister Cities will undertake a 100 Day Challenge

Udaipur has highlighted its performance towards implementing the Smart City mission by ranking among the top 20 cities across the 100 cities selected for the Smart City mission in 2015.

In an implementation survey conducted by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, 20 top performing cities have been paired with the bottom 20 cities and they will work as “sister cities”.

While neighboring Ahmedabad has been ranked in the top rung, Udaipur is 4th in performance after Varanasi and Ranchi. Nagpur,  Bhopal, Surat, Kanpur, Visakhapatnam, Vellore, Tiruppur, Vadodara, Nashik, Agra, Dehradun, Davanagere, Kota, Pune, Indore, and Amravati are the other cities as per rank.

“Udaipur, being the 4th best performing city in Smart City implementation, is now also the third city in the 100 selected cities to ask for release of the 2nd tranch of Rs 300 Crore towards implementing its smart city projects”Abid Khan, Chief Financial Advisor, Udaipur Smart City Mission

The 20-20 formula devised by the Ministry will have the top 20 performing cities act as mentors to the bottom 20 cities and share ideas with them, to improve their performance.  Ranchi will be a mentor to Shimla, Pune will be mentor to Dharamsala. Ahmedabad will improve Chandigarh while Varanasi will act as a guide to Amritsar, another holy city. The pairing is based on regional and cultural compatibility.  Accordingly, Visakhapatnam will help Diu while Surat will help Sharanpur to improve their performance.  Bhopal will be mentor to Aizwal.

As per a ministry official, the paired cities will have to sign a memorandum before 20 February to ensure expeditious execution of the projects and report compliance to the Smart Cities Mission Directorate.  This will be a 100 day challenge program.

One such most crucial part of smart city programme is city extension and city renewal. In these areas, it is essential to make sure the development is comprehensive and inclusive.
