Udaipur Police Dog Squad gets Belgian Melinois
Dog handlers at the Udaipur Police informed media that the earlier Labrador species were slightly lazy and slow, whereas the Melinois breed is obstinate, swift, hard working, alert, proactive, cheeky and confident. These dogs have been procured from Bangalore. He also said that the dogs ability to get to the source of smell is very acute and the animal approaches the source silently and stealthily, ensuring that the suspects are not aware that they have been cornered. However, ADG Pankaj Kumar has warned that the dogs should not be kept near coolers or AC and should be exposed only to natural shade or fan cooling, else the dogs could get lazy
Melinois is a medium to large breed of dog, sometimes classified as a variety of the Belgian Shepherd dog, rather than as a separate breed. The Belgian Malinois is used by the US Secret Service to guard the grounds of the White House. This breed is used as a working dog for tasks including detection of explosive odor, arson accelerant investigation, tracking humans for apprehension of suspects in police search and rescue missions.
Rajasthan Police, following the footsteps of their compatriots in US, UK, France, Germany etc have procured 28 such dogs for their operational purposes and 12 of them have already been trained by training team consisting of Constable Pratap Singh and Constable Kailash Chandra. 16 of them are undergoing training. Two dog squads each for Udaipur and Alwar and 8 for Jaipur have been allotted of the 12 trained animals. Udaipur squad consting of Husky and Lima are ready for deployment into action.
