Few days back when a group of students from Europe, Asia and Africa visited the marble slurry dumping yard at Chitrakut Nagar, their expression was shocking as expected.
Students under the banner of Centre for Science and Environment analyzed how the dumping yard is badly affecting the natural habitat of Chitrakut Nagar, which was once a cluster of green hills beautifying the horizon of the City of Lakes.
The group reached the dumping yard site with members of the Lake Conservation Committee and Mohan Singh Mehta Memorial Trust. Students from Italy, South Africa, Britain, Nepal, Bangladesh and Japan saw the how hills have been demolished to prepare for dumping.
According to one of the news published in UT on June 19, the UIT had asked the district council to allot a proper place for dumping marble slurry and also requested the Udaipur Marble Association to discontinue using the place as it badly damages the environment.
Even after dumping is prohibited in the area, JCB vehicles were seen actively working. It was even more shocking when the group learnt that a cricket stadium and residential area is just below the dumping yard.
The group of students, headed by Dr. Tejrajdan, Secretary of the Lake Conservation Committee and Bhupendra Singh Ahuja, Secretary of MSCF introduced the green bridge project at City Palace prior to their visit to the dumping yard. The group also visited Udai Sagar Lake.
