New Railway Underpass Planned in Bedwas
Udaipur, Sept 4, 2025 - The narrow railway bridge located on the road connecting Bedwas to the main highway is soon to become history. Indian Railways has initiated the process to construct a new underpass in this area.
A Notice Inviting Tender (NIT) has already been issued, under which a new railway underpass of 5.0×2.5 metres will be built near the existing bridge. The project is expected to cost around Rs 2.37 crore. Once completed, the underpass will provide a big advantage to residents of Bedwas, the Bedwas–Madri link road and about 15 surrounding colonies and villages. It is estimated that 6,000 to 7,000 people use this route daily.
Residents have been demanding either a wider bridge or a new underpass for years. Currently, the narrow bridge only allows two-wheelers to pass. The situation worsens during the rainy season, when water-logging makes it difficult even for pedestrians to cross. On several occasions, students have had to risk their lives by crossing the railway tracks. In emergencies, ambulances and fire brigades cannot use this route, forcing them to take detours which are longer.
Four-wheeler drivers often have to travel an extra 8 kilometres owing to the lack of proper connectivity.
The matter was raised by Udaipur MP Dr Manna Lal Rawat, Udaipur Rural MLA Phool Singh Meena, and several other public representatives. Local resident Bhuvnesh Kumar Ameta even took the issue to the High Court.
Now, with Indian Railways preparing to construct the underpass, residents of the area are hopeful of major relief.
