Udaipur Cop lays claim to naming of Modi’s girl campaignChetna Bhati, the chief of the women’s police station in Udaipur has laid claim to naming “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”. It may be noted that “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana” is one of Modi’s pet projects.

Bhati claims that the slogan was first conceived by her in 1999 for a series of poems she wrote. She say that she does not need any money or publicity for this – she is only doing it to get due recognition.

Bhati has been filing Right To Information (RTI) requests to the Prime Minister’s Office to find out how it decided on coining the phrase.

It may be noted that “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana” was launched in Oct 2014 by Modi Government shortly after coming to power in May 2014. The project has identified “gender critical districts” where child sex ratio has declined considerably. The project has been well supported by several celebrities.

Bhati claims that in 2002, she had sent some posters on saving the girl child to Rajasthan Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot, but never heard back. She claims that she then publicly recited her poems on “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” in 2005.

Bhati hopes to get a recognition from PM Modi for the same.
