Udaipur's Iconic Nehru Garden to Reopen on Sept 5
Udaipur, Sept 3, 2025 - The wait for the opening of the popular Nehru Garden is over as the garden is scheduled to be inaugurated on September 5, 2025, after completion of the extensive renovation and strengthening work. Located in the middle of Fateh Sagar, Nehru Park is one of the city’s five prestigious landmarks. Along with the park, beautification works on the lake worth around Rs 10 crore, including the installation of a musical fountain, will also be officially inaugurated.
According to the Udaipur Development Authority (UDA) Commissioner Rahul Jain, the Nehru Garden island, which spans about 2 hectares, was transferred from the Udaipur Nagar Nigam to the UDA. Following this transfer various development and restoration works were carried out by the authority under the Chief Minister’s Budget Announcement for FY 2024-25.
Currently, civil works, footpaths, water bodies, heritage structures and horticulture elements have been fully restored and upgraded. The footpath levels have also been raised considering the lake’s maximum water level during peak capacity. On September 5, boat services to Nehru Garden will begin and the island will be opened to the general public and tourists.
On the same day, a foundation stone will be laid for the musical fountain in the garden’s water bodies and for the facade lighting project covering the entire premises.
Commissioner Jain further informed that boat services to Nehru Garden will operate from the newly-constructed jetty located near the open gym park near Rajiv Gandhi Smriti Udyan on Rani Road.
Owing to growing traffic congestion between Fateh Sagar’s Kala Kiwad (spillway) and the overflow point, and the lack of proper parking near the older jetty near Circuit House, the boarding point has now been shifted. The new location at Rani Road, in front of Guru Govind Singh Park, offers better access and ample parking at the nearby Rajiv Gandhi Smriti Udyan—thus resolving parking challenges.
Jain mentioned that after resolving legal hurdles in the tender process for boat operations, work orders have been issued and services are now ready to launch. Initially, boat rides to Nehru Garden will operate from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Post Diwali, as the tourist season begins and once the musical fountain and facade lighting are fully operational, the garden hours will be extended till 9:30 pm.
