The first Earth Hour was organized in Sydney, Australia in year 2007. About 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. This effort of people won laurels from all over the world and a year later, this event went Global. Earth Hour took the form of a Global Movement of saving the Planet Earth. More than 50 million people across 35 countries/territories participated next year in 2008.
Not only individuals and businesses, global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum were also a part of this noble cause. All of these stood in darkness for an hour.
The third Earth Hour was organized in March 2009 in which over 4000 cities in 88 countries/territories officially switched off the power to contribute for the planet. This made Earth Hour 2009 as the world’s largest global climate change initiative.
This was just another beginning and the fourth Earth Hour organized on Saturday 27 March, 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour ever. This event was supported by 128 countries and territories to join the global display of climate action. Billions of people across the world switched off their lights for an hour and contributed to this cause for one thing which we share – our Planet Earth.
Today, March 26, 2011will witness the fifth Earth Hour at 8.30PM (local time). This Earth Hour makes a call to turn off the lights for more than an hour. Think what changes you can bring by contributing just for an hour. You get an hour to think about what other changes you can bring about. Contributions of people all around the world can make a big difference.
Join us and turn off the lights for at least an hour from 8.30PM to 9.30 PM.
