Ghanta ghar – Knowing our clock tower better

Built in 1887, the towering Clock Tower or the Ghanta ghar is in the heart of the city popularly known by the same name. It was the first public clock of the city and was built as a souvenir to the royal family of Mewar. The clocks were brought to Udaipur from London.

This was established at the time when people didn’t have watches. Hence these kind of towers were built in the central area of the town and in those times these used to be the tallest structures. Clocks were placed inside these towers so they could be heard out loud and clear and people could get to work. Before the arrival of the mechanised clocks, people relied on water clocks for timings. These water clocks or the jal ghadis were not too common in the ancient times.

The issue of concern is that if maintenance of these clocks is not taken care of, we might lose the antique structure which is also an attraction for the tourists. Earlier the expense of clock maintenance was borne by the locals of that area. It definitely needs more attention because of its antique importance for the coming generations.

The area has now become over crowded because it is also the hub of gold and silver jewellery of the city.
