Gulab bag also known as Sajjan niwas garden is spread over 100 acres and has an innumerable variety of roses and that’s how it got its name. It was built by Maharana Sajjan Singh in 1881. It is one of the most beautiful and largest garden in Rajasthan. In 1882 T.H.Story, a horticulturist from Chennai was appointed to grow medicinal plants and he stayed here till 1920. The garden has various trees like mango, neem, mulberry, banana, guava, lichi, pomegranate, aamla and many more. At that time, each tree had name tags with English, Hindi and botanical names. A lotus pond was also built in the garden which was demolished later to build a water works complex. The garden was also known as Badaa Baag but Gulab bag became more popular due to the variety of roses.
Saraswati Bhawan Library
In 1890 Maharana Sajjan Singh laid the foundation for Victoria Museum which is now the Saraswati Bhawan Library. The library has books related to archaeology, history and several manuscripts dating back to the early medieval period. A large sized statue of Queen Victoria in white marble was placed outside the library in the garden but was replaced after independence with that of Mahatma Gandhi. As a museum, it had various antique pieces and curios and some relics from the past which are still kept there.
Gulab Baag Zoo
The garden also houses a small zoo which has animals and birds in cages. There is a toy train in which children and adults both can take a ride. The station has been named as Luv Kush railway station.
Navlakha Mahal
A palace which is a religious place for the Arya Samaj is situated in the centre most part of the garden. Known as Navlakha Mahal, this is the place where Dayanad Saraswati founder of Arya Samaj spent his spiritual life.
An artificial water by the name of Kamal Talai is also a centre of attraction.
Inhabitants of the area near Gulab bag can be seen in the garden for their morning walks and yoga daily. Earlier this place was a picnic spot for the schools in town.
