Fatehsagar lake, a name that doesn’t need to be introduced as it has already made its mark in pages of history. Who doesn’t love the beauty of this lake? Whether it is morning walk time, or the evening one, whether to have fun with friends or just sit quietly…all Udaipurites love to be by the lake side. This is an artificial lake named after Maharana Fateh Singh of Udaipur and is one of the four lakes in the city. Within the confines of the lake is a very beautiful island called Nehru Park and there is also a solar observatory.

It is almost 44 feet deep and is pear shaped. The main source of water is rain. During less or no rain or drought, the lake water has met the needs till now. With the growing population and global warming, too, the city hasn’t seen enough rainfall in the past few years the way it used to be 10-15 years before. Every lake lover’s mind is worried about this as they have seen the dry lake bed more than 20 years back, the thought of which still creates a shiver as this is the source of water supply to the town and a solace to the tired minds, too.

Talking of solace, the lakeside view is so breathtakingly beautiful when the water comes to hit the roads during rains, the waves caused by the wind creates ripples in hearts and those with tensed nerves feel an automatic relief the moment they set their eyes on water. The music of the waves sensed by the poetic mind brings in rhythmic ideas and the painters paint the vision with their heart once they have fed their souls with the view. The birds dancing with the waves teach you to feel light and carefree hence soothing your senses well enough to forget the pain for some time.

When I go there, my mind starts loosening up as I stare constantly towards that distance unknown which is created by the dancing waves and I start wondering if the flexibility of the water(well, that’s what I call it ) can be applied to the human mind (this is where mind wanders into a philosophic approach which I am not getting deeper into. Music does bring peace, of course a specific kind of music and not the rocking one. The waves seem to be drawing in that peace from some corner of the universe and when you go there, it is transferred to you).

The lake makes me talk, it moves my senses a lot. The picturesque view of the lake has drawn in many people and it has been filmed a lot many times. The sunrise view has been captured a thousand times over. What makes it more appealing is the reflection of the sunset in the water with the hills  around looking perfectly set with a dark orange gold combination as if set by a painter to create a mystic look.
