Places of Udaipur: Roothi Rani ka mahal

The palace more popular by the name of Roothi Rani ka mahal was built by Maharana Jai Singh(1680-1698 AD) for his youngest queen in Veerpura of Jaisamand. Initially known as Hawa Mahal, it went on to be called as Roothi Rani ka mahal as the queen had become upset with the king for some reason and after leaving the king’s palace had started living here.

She hailed from Panwar family of Bijolia. After her marriage to the Maharana, the Queen is said to have spent long hours in waiting for him for the first night. Since the Maharana got too late in meeting the queen, she got annoyed with him and pledged never to return and went on to live in the Hawa Mahal, hence the name.

The palace is in Jaisamand, around 48 km from Udaipur. It is must watch place for those who love adventure and thrill. It is now being maintained by the archaeological department and is also a good trekking spot. During monsoon and winters, it is the centre of attraction for trek lovers. The walk to the palace is almost 4 km uphill. The natural beauty around the palace is worth a walk.
