Press in India-needs not or needs freedom?

Press in India-needs not or needs freedom?

I never observed lack of press freedom in India except in some Maoist affected states and a few parts of Kashmir. In fact I noted that in comparison to any other developing countries of the world Indian climate provides surplus freedom to mass media.

3rd May ‘The World Press Freedom Day 2011’ to mark the freedom of expression by Press of world is ended.

From harsh field reporting to frustrating writing and editing all day’s stories, selecting the best suitable photographs and finalzing it to publish. This is a common routine of any journalist and reporter in India and  probably in any other country of the world.

Press in India-needs not or needs freedom? From a self-learned blogger turning an online journalist I never observed lack of press freedom in India except in some Maoist affected states and a few parts of Kashmir. In fact I noted that in comparison to any other developing countries of the world Indian climate provides surplus freedom to mass media.

On a serious note – In the year 2010, India was named 8th deadliest country for journalists (source).

But take a minute and observe ‘ how effectively our so called Indian news channels are still actively investigating with their magical journalistic skills ?. They are working hard to  discover Osama’s leftovers, and findings, who used to deliver milk to Osama and family?. How Osama used to feel without an air conditioner ?   All exclusive, first to broadcast and that BREAKING NEWS bar running down the main screen.

Perhaps CNN who are first to broke the Osama’s death cannot compete with some of Indian news channels.

The veteran journalist Kuldeep Nayar told IANS “The press is independent here but not free because the corporate sector has more influence now. But in conflict areas like the northeast and Kashmir, the freedom of press is only for name’s sake,”

Undoubtedly press is absolutely free in India, free to telecast even an interview with an alien sitting somewhere in space.  We the superficial Indians believe it and appraise it.

Now let me ask the question ….What do you think about Indian press and media?

Do they  really bridge the gap  between common people and government ?

or you have some different  opinion?
