The Delhi Gang Rape Case: Homicide, Suicide or Justified…‘Nirbhaya’ who, posthumously, was awarded the ‘International woman of Courage Award’ by America, is being considered, by many, to have received justice when one of the accused, Ram Singh, committed suicide by hanging himself in the ‘highly secure’ Tihar Jail this morning.

Where social sites are flooded with messages and posts indicating celebration, the father and the lawyer of the accused have opined otherwise stating it as a ‘murder’. The question now to be asked is about the security of the jail in this high profile matter.

Ram Singh had admitted to the heinous crime in the court and wished ‘Capital Punishment’ for the same. The country was waiting for the court’s decision for this main accused in the case when on the 11th of March he hung himself from the grill of a ventilator of the Jail no. 3.

Ram Singh was driving the bus in which the 23 year old Para Medical student was brutally raped and tortured on the 16th of December 2012. With his suicide, The Tihar Jail security is under suspicion now. The famous prison has more than 12000 prisoners out of which 500 are women. A total of 18 prisoners have committed suicide in Tihar since 2012.

His Lawyer, V. K. Anand has demanded a CBI enquiry as he suspects the incident should not have occurred if the security was not compromised. There were three more prisoners in the same barrack and none seem to know anything about it.

Moreover, Ram Singh’s father adds that he had been visiting his son in the jail since he was shifted in. He says that Ram Singh was mistreated by the fellow prisoners, physically and mentally.

V. K. Anand has also said that the accused was beaten up several times by his inmates and was once also attacked with a blade. He questions the security of the ‘main’ accused in the jail which boasts of 24 hours high security.

Ram Singh was kept in the same barrack no. 3 where the infamous terrorist Afzal Guru was held.

Afzal was kept in a special security cell alone in the barrack. Being the main accused of the Delhi gang rape, Ram Singh knew of the severe consequences that he would face in the end.

After Afzal Guru was hung discreetly in the jail lately, Ram Singh was afraid of a similar outcome. But did he hang himself or is it a ‘conspiracy’ as quoted by Ram Singh’s Lawyer, we will have to wait.
