Our past makes our present and what we do today, defines our future. All the things that literally make us who we are today is because of the heritage. Therefore, it is vital to make efforts to preserve the heritage which is our cultural, educational, aesthetics, inspirational and economic legacies.

Today is the World Heritage Day, a day commemorated by the UNESCO to spread awareness among the public regarding the conservation and preservation of their heritage. The first time, the day was celebrated on 18th April, 1982 in Tunisia by International Council of Monuments & Sites.

In Udaipur, Heritage encapsulates 391 sites besides the lakes which have led the city stand in the world for its beauty, grandeur and rich culture. These sites have been listed, by Nagar Nigam under the title of heritage properties. The ardent need of the hour is to preserve every monument and site that is not just the responsibility of the governing body but of each and every individual who associates himself with Udaipur.

According to the Nigam consultant, a survey was conducted in the city to ascertain the heritage buildings and spots. In the survey report, the heritage properties counted to 391 including 93 Temples, one Church, one Dargah, 40 Water Structures (31 Baolis, 9 Lakes and Ayad River), 72 Havelis, 12 Gates, one Railway Station, 7 Forts & Palaces, 12 Office Buildings, 171 Residential Buildings, 4 Hospitals, 5 Educational Institutions, 8 Gardens and 1 Reserve, 10 Inns & Guest Houses, 87 Traditional Buildings, 5 City Courts, 3 Bridges and 21 Transport Properties.

On the occasion of World Heritage Day, the museums – City Palace and Ahar Museum will permit free entry from 9 AM to 6 PM. Nigam has made a heritage conservation project under which 5 old markets will be renovated in the budget of Rs. 12 Crore.
