According to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, India can overtake other automotive manufacturing hubs in the globe in five years if automakers improve safety measures to lower the number of fatalities from traffic accidents. He said on Thursday, January 12, 2023.

The minister of road transport and highways stated in his opening remarks at the Auto Expo 2023 that the government's goal is to cut accidents by 50% by the end of 2024 while requesting the auto industry to take suo moto action for road safety as the government does not want to make anything mandatory.

Mahendra Nath Pandey, the minister of Heavy industries, shared Gadkari's thoughts when he lamented the fact that, although having just 1% of the world's automobiles, India is responsible for 11% of all traffic-related fatalities worldwide.
