34.5 Billion Dollar Offer for Google Chrome: Perplexity AI

Owning Chrome will allow the Aravind Srinivas run 4 yr old AI start up to tap more than three billion users for its AI initiative

Udaipur, Aug 13, 2025: Perplexity AI has made a $34.5 billion unsolicited all-cash offer for Alphabet's Chrome browser, seeking to leverage Chrome's three billion users amidst growing regulatory pressures on Google.

The company, led by Aravind Srinivas, previously attempted a similar bid for TikTok US. Although Google has not put Chrome up for sale and is appealing a court ruling on its alleged monopoly, Perplexity aims to fund its offer and has secured backing from multiple funds.

The startup's proposal includes maintaining the open-source Chromium code, investing $3 billion over two years, and keeping Chrome's default search engine unchanged. Analysts suggest that Google is unlikely to sell Chrome, anticipating a protracted legal battle, particularly as it integrates AI features to bolster its market position.

Perplexity’s bid is notably below the $50 billion valuation suggested by DuckDuckGo’s CEO. Other companies, including OpenAI, Yahoo, and Apollo Global Management, have also shown interest in Chrome. Perplexity AI, Inc. was founded in 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski. As of July 2025, the company was valued at US$18 billion.
