Maharana Pratap Airport is about to begin with cargo services in March 2021. The Udaipur Airport Authority has requested for approval from Bureau Civil Secretary for starting cargo services. Once the request is approved, Udaipur will become the second airport in the region providing air cargo services. As of now, only Jaipur has the facility of air cargo.
The Udaipur airport authorities have already geared up with man power required for this particular work. The commencement of cargo services will have a positive impact on both national and international market. Once the approval is granted, a cargo terminal will be prepared with a capacity of 20 tonne-cargos.
The cargo terminal will be similar to a hi-tech cold storage wherein things can be stored and secured for a long term period at a particular temperature. 3 crore rupees are likely to be spent on the cargo terminal.
The cargo services from Udaipur airport will facilitate businesses like handicraft, hotel industry, medical industry and the destination wedding industry. Since handicrafts of Udaipur have made a mark in the national and international market, transporting these products will become quite safe with air cargo services. The royal weddings have a high demand of flowers for decoration. These flowers can now easily be brought from Kolkata and Bengaluru and will also stay fresh. Even a variety of vegetables, fruits and a lot of other food products can be brought from other cities without the fear of getting rotten on the way. Spices from South, perfumes etc. and the local sweets can also be transported safely. Life saving equipments, medicines etc. can be conveniently brought and sent through air cargo.
