Hallmarking Now Mandatory for 9-Carat Gold Jewellery

As per new rules by BIS, only 24-carat minted or refinery-made gold coins will be considered authentic

July 19, 2025 - The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced that hallmarking will now be mandatory for 9-carat gold jewellery as well. This was shared in a post on X by the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council.

“Nine carat Gold (375 ppt) is now officially under mandatory hallmarking as per BIS Amendment No. 2 All jewellers and hallmarking centres must comply,” the Council said.

The new rules have been implemented from July 2025.

Hallmarking indicates the purity of gold under the BIS Act 2016. It certifies the proportionate content of precious metal in jewellery and artefacts. With gold prices rising rapidly in the market, people have started purchasing 9-carat gold jewellery, which is significantly cheaper compared to 22-carat or 18-carat jewellery. Considering this consumer trend, the decision has been made to include 9-carat gold in the hallmarking system.

Now, hallmarking will apply to 24KT, 23KT, 22KT, 20KT, 18KT, 14KT as well as 9-carat gold. 9-carat gold means the gold is 37.5% pure.

BIS has also made some changes to its regulations. Gold watches and pens are now excluded from the definition of "artefacts" and will no longer require hallmarking.

A new rule has also been introduced regarding gold coins: only those made from thin sheets of 24-carat gold will be considered valid gold coins. Furthermore, these coins must be manufactured exclusively by a mint or refinery.
