Income Tax return filing deadline extended to 10 January 2021 - other deadlines also extended

Government of India has for the third time extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns for the Financial Year 2019-20 to January 10, 2021. The earlier extension was till 31 December 2020.

Addressing the distress caused by the COVID-19 situation in India and the challenges faced by taxpayers in meeting statutory compliances due to the COVID outbreak, the Government of India has for the third time extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns for the Financial Year 2019-20 to January 10, 2021. The earlier extension was till 31 December 2020. Relief has also been provided to the small and middle class tax payers.


As per the notification from the Central Board of Direct Taxes, the due dates for various groups of tax payers has been revised as follows:

  1. Income Tax Returns for accounts who are not required to be audited and who file return under ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms has been extended from 31 December 2020 to 10 January 2021
  2. Filing declaration under the Direct Tax dispute resolution scheme under Vivad Se Vishwas has been extended till 31 January 2021
  3. Filing of Income Tax Returns by companies and individuals who need to get their accounts audited has been extended to 15 February 2021.
  4. Due date for filing Annual Returns for FY 2019-20 under the Central Goods and Services Tax Act has been extended to 28 February 2021.
  5. Due date for filing self assessment tax has been extended to 15 February 2021.
