Aug 2, 2025 - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the welfare of the country’s small businesses and local farmers remain “top priority” for the government. This comment has come in the wake of new US levies imposed on Indian exports even as US President Donald Trump has threatened penalties on India for purchasing Russian arms and oil.

"I earnestly request my brothers and sisters iin the business community today that, when the world is going through such an atmosphere of instability, we too should sell only indigenous goods. This resolve will also be a true service to the nation. Every moment, we will now buy only indigenous goods. This will be a great tribute to Mahatma Gandhi," PM Modi said.

The Indian government has hardened its position on certain sectors, yet maintaining a non-confrontational stance.

According to a government official, “We are engaged with American officials and securing our national interest is our primary objective. Govt is not going to come under pressure on areas that concern farmers and small businesses”.

The government is particularly concerned over farm and dairy products, beef and animal feed with meat and genetically modified food.

Meanwhile, Commerce and Industry Minister is scheduled to hold meetings with exporters over the next few days. The latter are looking for sops from the government to make up for possible loss of orders following the 25% tariff imposition by the US. Sectors that could be affected are textiles, chemicals and footwear.
