IBM (International Business Machine Corporation), India has announced in the end of year 2010 about its expansion in tier 3 cities of India, according to information, IBM will soon start its recruiting process.

According to news published in various newspapers in Dec.2010, IBM had revealed its intention to spread its arms in the small and medium enterprise (SME) area and targeted to expand its trade from 22 cities (Tier1 and Tier2) to 45 cities (including Tier3) by the end of 2013.

Some of the small cities proposed in the list including Udaipur are Ranchi, Raipur, Guwahati, Vizag, Allahabad, Indore, Jharsuguda and Nagpur.

As published in Business Line of The Hindu, an English daily, according to Nipun Mehrotra, Vice-President – General Business, Routes and Geographic Expansion, IBM, “For IBM, SME client are companies those who have employees less than 1000 in number with a medium sized infrastructure and lacks in management of data center, networks and security system.”

Nipun has further added to Business line “We want to be physically present in every area. At present we have few thousand clients in SMB sector and we hope to double that in coming years. IBM has packages for SMB like infrastructure monitoring (example an SMS alert when there is a break-down in the server), a remote fixing element, or help-desk service and back-up recovery, all weighed as low as $0.5 million.”

It must be noted, that IBM is far ahead in the SMB sector, when the homegrown IT giants like TCS and Infosys have fallen behind in identifying this segment as the next growth bet. Wipro has certainly made inroads in this segment and has emerged as a formidable player.
