Multipurpose Cooperatives to Redefine Rural Economy in State
Aug 5, 2025 - Across Rajasthan, work is underway to form new cooperative societies. Under the new cooperative model, 54 types of services will be made available at the rural level itself. In the State, 2,500 cooperative societies will be formed in the next two years, with district-wise targets already assigned.
As part of the Sahkar Se Samriddhi (Prosperity through Cooperation) campaign, efforts to strengthen the foundation of cooperatives in the State are progressing rapidly. Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has approved a Rs 2,000-crore grant for the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) for a period of four years. This will support cooperative institutions in starting new projects, expanding plants and providing loans.
In Udaipur district, 180 Common Service Centres have been registered and the process of opening around 90 PM Kisan Samriddhi Kendras is currently underway.
To ensure the reach of this new model of cooperation to every village, 2 lakh new cooperative societies are proposed to be formed across the country. Currently, there are more than 8,000 cooperative societies in the State. Around 180 GSS (Gram Seva Societies) are in Udaipur district. Formation of 2,500 multi-purpose cooperative societies is planned.
Village service cooperative societies will now function as multipurpose cooperative societies. Basic needs such as milk, grains, vegetables, gas, diesel-petrol, medicines, education and internet will also be fulfilled through these societies.
They will be able to start any type of business within their area. This will include:
- Dairy business
- Fishery activities
- Grain storage
- Operate e-services, offering access to over 300 types of services
- Distribution work
- Operate retail outlets for selling diesel and petrol
- Generic medicine stores
- Fertilizer distribution centres
- Provide micro-ATM facilities
- Operate universities and colleges
- Offer cab and bike rental services
