Net Neutrality: Flipkart walks out of ‘Airtel Zero’

An update making rounds in the web news corner is that Indian E-Com giant Flipkart has backed out from opting any participation in Airtel Zero.

Flipkart Co-Founder, Sachin Bansal came under heavy fire recently when he tweeted his support to Airtel’s – Airtel Zero campaign, which as per the Indian internet peeps is the very definition of going against Net Neutrility.

What is Net Neutrality?

As every confused online soul does, we googled it and Wikipedia says that, “Net neutrality (also network neutrality, Internet neutrality, or net equality) is the principle that Internet service providers and governments should treat all data on the Internet equally, not discriminating or charging differently by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication.”

“The term was coined by Columbia University media law professor Tim Wu in 2003, as an extension of the longstanding concept of a common carrier.”

Coming to the current scenario, netneutrality.in states that – “Due to intense lobbying by telecom operators like Airtel and Vodafone, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is planning to allow them to block apps and websites to extort more money from consumers and businesses — an extreme violation of net neutrality”.

“TRAI has released a consultation paper with 20 questions spread across 118 complicated pages and wants you to send them an e-mail by 24th of April, 2015.”, it adds.

Now, if you’ve been enjoying your net freedom till now, you should be concerned about this. We will be adding a video below which will help you understand this concept better and what you can do to support Net Neutrality.

In the same chain of events, when the whole Indian Netizens were busy supporting Net Neutrailty, Sachin Bansal tweeted about his views on Airtel Zero and that instantly caught fire.

Many (read immense amount of) users went ahead and deleted Flipkart’s app and downvoted it on Google app store because of their approach towards the issue.

Hence, in a recent update today it was learnt that Flipkart officially stepped back from their consideration of participating in Airtel Zero plan.

P.S. Here is a video by AIB (All India Bakchod) team explaining How, Why and What to do to save our internet and force TRAI to not go against Net Neutrality.
