May 28, 2025 - The Income Tax Department yesterday, May 27, announced the extension of the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26) moving it from July 31 to September 15, 2025. 

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has said that the decision to extend the due date was made to allow sufficient time for necessary system readiness and to accommodate major changes made in the ITR forms.

"To facilitate a smooth and convenient filing experience for taxpayers, it has been decided that the due date for filing ITR, originally due on July 31, is extended to September 15, 2025," said CBDT.
