PAN-Aadhaar Linking Deadline Dec 31; Penalty from Jan 1

PAN must be linked to Aadhaar by December 31, 2025, unlinked PAN cards will become inactive from January 1, 2026

Dec 23, 2025 - December 31, 2025, is the last late to complete PAN-Aadhaar linking and if the deadline is not extended, then unlinked PAN cards will become inactive from January 1, 2026, and taxpayers will have to pay a penalty of Rs 1,000 to reactivate them. This mandate has been given through a Ministry of Finance notification dated April 3, 2025.

According to the Income Tax (IT) Department and UIDAI, linking PAN with Aadhaar is mandatory and can be completed online through the IT Department’s official website. The government has extended the deadline multiple times in the past, but as of now, December 31 remains the last date.

Therefore, individuals allotted PAN using an Aadhaar enrolment ID before October 1, 2024, must intimate their Aadhaar number to the IT Department on or before December 31, 2025.

If a PAN card becomes inactive, taxpayers may face difficulties in filing Income Tax Returns, receiving refunds, opening bank-related services and completing financial transactions. Reactivating an inactive PAN may take 7 to 30 days, in addition to the penalty of Rs 1,000.
