If you are embarking on your first USA road trip, you are certainly in for an adventure. There is so much ground to cover, and so many things to see and do along the way, that you will really want to plan out the areas you wish to visit and make sure you know the ways to get around.  Unlike in Europe, major public transportation routes are lacking in America, meaning you will have to rely on transportation such as motorhome rental and car rental to reach your planned destinations.

When traveling through America, there are several transportation possibilities you will want to consider.

RV Rentals

One of the best ways to get around the USA is to rent an RV. RVs give you complete mobility, allowing you to be constantly on the road experiencing the best of what the country has to offer. Since an RV also acts as your home, this allows you the opportunity to sleep comfortably in your vehicle, saving you from steep hotel expenses.

All throughout the country, you can find RV campgrounds where you can safely park and camp for the night or for an extended period of time. These parks offer lots of amenities such as septic hookups, wifi, restroom facilities, and more. No matter where you are in the country, you can absolutely find a decent RV park within reach. This makes RV travel by far one of the best ways to see the country.

Car Rentals

Another great way to get around is by renting a car. You can find car rental centers at any airport in the nation, plus at many other locations. Just about every city and town in the country will have at least one car rental facility somewhere close by. You can rent a car for short term or longer periods of time. No matter the ground you wish to cover, you will be able to find a rental agreement that will suit your needs.

Unlike with RV rentals, it will not be comfortable to camp out in your car so you will have to stay in hotels and motels along the way. Depending on your travel style, this can certainly be a drawback. But for travelers who simply want transportation from point A to point B, then car rentals are a good fit. You can also choose which type of car you will want, making sure you are never stuck with a vehicle you are uncomfortable with.

Public Transportation

Although long distance public transformation isn’t as popular in the States as it is in Europe, you can get around most major cities on public transportation. For example, New York City is nearly all public transit-based and is the main mode of transportation for millions in the metro area. Other cities, such as Los Angeles, are nearly fully car-dependent. It all depends on where you are going, so check ahead of time what public transit is like at your intended destination.

When it comes to crossing the country, you can always look into Amtrack if you aren’t interested in driving. Amtrack trains cover the entire country and have many stops all over the US.  If you wish to travel by train, you can visit the Amtrack website and map out your route. Due to the stops, this is slower travel than moving by vehicle and also offers less flexibility, but if you simply want to get from one place to another without the need for a vehicle, you will want to look into the possibility of train travel.
