Could the Tata Nano Return In An EV Version? Company Hints

Recently, a statement by Ajay Jain, India Design Head of Tata Motors, has reignited the discussion. 

When asked in an interview whether the Nano could make a comeback, he smiled and said, "We will try." He added that he would be proud to see the Nano in a new and modern electric form in the coming years.

'NANO' Was The Cheapest Car In The World

When the Tata Nano was launched in 2009, it was promoted as the cheapest car in the world. However, this 'affordable' tag later became a major reason for its failure, as people started seeing it as a status symbol. However, today's Indian market has changed a lot. People now prefer small, city-friendly cars. Therefore, bringing the Nano back to the market will fully meet the needs of today's Indian customers.

Tata Leads the EV Market

Tata Motors currently leads the electric vehicle market in India. As of July 2026, Tata has sold 13,678 electric vehicles, capturing a 41.54% market share in the segment. Tata currently offers EV models such as the Tiago, Punch, Nexon, Kard, Harrier and Sierra. However, there is still a gap in the market for highly affordable electric vehicles priced lower than the Tiago EV.

Regarding the AI ​​images that have gone viral on social media, Ajay Jain said that these are just a reflection of people's emotions and expectations. People still expect a lot from Tata. It is worth noting that attempts have been made to electrify the Nano in the past. Tata Motors, in collaboration with Coimbatore-based Zeem Automotives, had developed an electric model of the Nano called 'Jayem Neo' for taxis.

What is its Range?

The old Jayem Neo model had a 17 kWh battery and a rear-mounted motor, which gave a range of about 130 km. However, today, when battery technology has improved a lot, a new Nano EV can easily offer a range of 200 km or more. It can also have improved safety features, better performance and a premium cabin. Although the company has not yet officially confirmed the launch of the Nano EV, Ajay Jain's statement clearly indicates that Tata still intends to bring back this iconic car in a new form.
