Udaipur, January 24, 2025 - Recently, some videos on social media claimed that SIM cards will stay active for 90 days even without a recharge because of new rules by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India). However, TRAI has denied this and called the claims misleading.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), TRAI explained

  • No new rules have been made about SIM card validity.

  • The current rule has been the same for 11 years.

The Rule
If a prepaid user has more than Rs 20/- balance in their account, their SIM card will not be deactivated for at least 90 days, even if it’s not used.

Confusion About New Plans

Some people are also unhappy with new voice-and-SMS-only plans launched by telecom companies. These plans, as per TRAI’s guidelines, don’t include mobile data.

  • Initially, users liked the idea of cheaper plans without data.

  • But companies are offering these plans at the same prices as before, reducing benefits instead of lowering costs.

TRAI is now looking into these plans to ensure they follow the rules.
