UdaipurTimes, August 7, 2026 | Insurance Premiums: Many people now take out life insurance. They want to keep their family safe with this policy. However, do not forget to pay the premium of this policy on time! If you miss the premium, the benefits may stop.

But even then, many people take the matter very lightly. They think that it will be okay if you pay the money later. Although in reality, the matter is not that easy.

Recently, in a case of Maharashtra State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, it was seen that a death claim of Rs 70 lakh was rejected due to non-payment of premium. So, we need to learn from this incident.

What exactly happened?

A customer of a life insurance policy of HDFC Life did not pay the premium for the second year. As a result, the policy lapsed after the stipulated time passed. Later, the person died. His family claimed insurance of Rs 70 lakh. But the company did not pay that money.

According to a report by The Economic Times, the revival quotation sent by the insurance company at the time of death was still valid. But the commission clearly states that the policy is active only if the revival quotation is valid. So be careful before you miss the premium.

What happens if you miss the premium?

The premium is definitely due on a specific day. However, it is not true that the insurance will be terminated if the money is not paid on that day.

Most life insurance policies have a grace period. That is, some additional time is given after the specified time. If you pay the money within that period, the policy is usually maintained.

Therefore, experts advise you to remember the premium due date and the end date of the grace period. Even if you miss the first, the policy can continue. But if the second one is exceeded, the policy may lapse.

What happens during the grace period?

It should be kept in mind that the grace period and the revival period are not the same thing. The policy remains valid during the grace period. If the person whose name is insured dies during this time, then the money can be received as per the terms of the policy. In many cases, the outstanding premium is deducted and the remaining money is given. That is, the policy in the grace period and the policy that has already lapsed are not the same.

What happens when the grace period ends?

This completely depends on the type of policy. Many policies lapse if the premium is not paid.

However, this does not happen in all cases. In many conventional life insurance policies, if the premium is paid for a certain period, a paid up value is created. Then the policy may not be completely closed and continue with fewer benefits.

So, a policy with a premium paid for only one year. And in the case of a policy that has been running for many years, the result will not be the same.

What is meant by a lapsed policy?

In simple words, if the premium is not paid within the specified period, the policy is not protected. This is why the policy lapses.

Can a lapsed policy be reactivated?

It can be done in many cases. This is called policy revival. Most insurance companies allow you to revive a lapsed policy within a certain period of time.

However, for this—

  • You have to pay the outstanding premium
  • You may be charged interest or additional charges
  • You may have to undergo a medical examination

The most important thing is that once the revival process starts, your life cover will not be restored immediately.

What to do if you miss a premium?

If you forget to pay the premium, first check the premium date.

Check if the grace period is still running.

Contact the insurance company's website, mobile app or customer care.

If there is a grace period, pay the premium as soon as possible. That's it, that's how you solve the problem.
