Rakhi does not only mean making merry, having fun and forgetting all about it the next day. It is a sacred festival which harbingers to bring out radical changes in the society as well. An act of bonding which fosters brotherhood and spreads a sense of unity and belonging should be made use to rid the evils of the society. One such initiative was taken by the Rajasthan government ahead of Rakhi as a measure to make the society tobacco free. On the coming Rakhi 2016, we should also pledge to do our bit to make this society free of all social taboo and abuse to make this festival even more sacred.

In the Anti-tobacco campaign launched by the Rajasthan government, the government urged the girls to make their brothers take a pledge to not consume tobacco. Girls after tying rakhi on the wrists of their brothers must ask them to write a sworn statement where they will vow not to consume tobacco anymore from that day onwards. They must keep that vow for the sake of their sisters and their well being. This should be the gift which the sisters demand of their brothers instead of any material gifts, as this will in return improve the life of their brothers. Owing to the very busy nature in our lives, online rakhi has been a boon as it saves us lot of time and energy and we also get many options at a single place.

Health Minister while launching the campaign said that “The aim of this campaign is to raise awareness among the people at all level against the use of tobacco.” To participate in this campaign, after the brothers have written the sworn in statement, the girls need to click a selfie with their brothers along with the written oath and email it to the medical and health department. Amongst them selected girls and their brothers will be felicitated by the health department at state level. This awareness programme was intended to make Rakhi a more sacred festival.
